Improvement Studies
The recommended preferred alternative was discussed at Community Advisory Group Meeting #4, which was held on July 16, 2018. The preferred alternative received concurrence from the Federal Highway Administration on September 13, 2018, and includes the above four independent improvement studies.
01 US-52 from River Rd to Houbolt RdThe proposed US-52 Capacity Improvement Project is intended to improve safety and operations. This alternative includes the reconstruction and widening of US-52 from east of River Rd to Houbolt Rd to provide two travel lanes in each direction with a raised curbed center median, and major intersection improvements at the US-52 intersection with IL 59, the I-55 interchange ramps and at Houbolt Rd. The project will accommodate connectivity of sidewalks and existing trails.
02 I-55 from I-80 to US-52The Interchange Project includes the conversion of the existing partial interchange at IL 59 and I-55 to a full access diverging diamond interchange also known as a DDI. A DDI is a double cross over diamond. The diamond shaped configuration allows for two directions of traffic on a bridge to cross to the opposite side of the bridge. The benefits of this type of interchange include improved safety and operations. This project provides connections for pedestrians and bicyclists over I-55 to IL 59 and new auxiliary lanes on I-55 between IL 59 and US-52 to improve congestion and safety for vehicles entering and exiting the expressway. This improvement study is complete and is under construction.
03 Olympic Blvd from I-55 East Frontage Rd to Houbolt RdThe East-West Connector Route Project includes the extension of Olympic Blvd west to the I-55 East Frontage Rd. This alternative includes intersection improvements at Houbolt Rd and Olympic Blvd as well as the construction of a new bridge crossing the Rock Run Creek floodplain and wetlands. This project provides a new shared use pedestrian/bike path and improves connectivity to the Rock Run Trail. This improvement study is complete. Subsequent phases of development are being led by the City of Joliet.
04 Seil Rd from Raven Rd to IL-59The proposed Seil Rd Capacity Improvement Project is intended to add capacity, mitigate traffic congestion and improve safety. The Seil Rd project between Raven Rd and I-55 West Frontage Rd includes the construction of mini-roundabouts at the Seil Rd intersections with States Lane and with Raven Rd. In addition to the mini-roundabouts, the proposed alternative includes a center left turn lane, bridge reconstruction and improved pedestrian/bicyclist connectivity over the DuPage River. This improvement study is complete. Subsequent phases of development are being led by the Village of Shorewood.
